The Multi-level Analysis on the Factors Improving the Settlement Consciousness of the Elderly Living Alone

Abstract
This study examines the community factors influencing the settlement consciousness of the elderly living alone, by focusing on the Aging in Place which is the main vision of the elderly policy. Multi-level analysis was conducted in order to understand the effect of community factors on the settlement consciousness, including not only the subjective evaluation level, but also objective indicators at the Dong-unit level. Individual-level data was collected from the self-questionnarie survey for the elderly living along in Suwon City. A total of 436 was used for the final analysis. Community-level data was consisted of the social indicators of 43 Dongs where the elderly living alone who participated in the survey reside.
Study results shows that the elderly living alone who live at the Dongs with the lower rate of the moving-in-and-out and the larger park per person, are more likely to have the higher settlement consciousness. In addition, the elderly living alone who are satisfied with housing environment, community environment, and neighborhood environment, are more likely to have the higher settlement consciousness. This study suggested the participation programs of community residents with the various ages, the creation of the environment facilitating the natural communication among residents, housing remodelling programs.
